CJ Van Eyk Leads Steinbrenner Past Alonso
For the first time since a thrilling 2016 Saladino Tournament Championship, the Steinbrenner Warriors squared-off against the Alonso Ravens on their home turf. Despite the change in venue the results were similiar for Steinbrenner in the rematch. Tournament MVP CJ Van Eyk once again led the way, this time on the mound, going the distance to propel the Warriors to a 2-0 win over the Ravens on Tuesday night.
Van Eyk struck out seven batters to lead Steinbrenner to its fourth victory in the past five games. He had an incredibly efficient night, allowing four hits and walking just three on 84 pitchers over seven innings. He finished the game with seven punch outs and finished off the Ravens in dominate fashion, setting them down in order to close out the game.
The Warriors (9-3) never trailed in this contest. The game remained scoreless through the first four innings until an RBI single from Cam Coakley broke the tie in the top of the fifth and gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead. They added another run in the top of the sixth when Donovan Garcia scored on a wild pitch.
The two-run lead was more than enough for CJ Van Eyk, who only allowed seven Ravens to reach base. Van Eyk had only one inning where he allowed multiple Ravens to reach base and allowed only one base runner in the final two innings.
Jordan Lala and Justin Turk both had multi-hit games for the Warriors. Lala went 2-for-4 and Turk went 2-for-3, stealing a base and scoring the first run of the game. Dalton Raeckers and Salvador Cimino collected the other hits for the Warriors. In total, 11 players reached base for the Warriors.
Jordan Butler, Joeseph Villalta and Nick Gonzalez tallied the only hits for the Ravens (9-4), with Gonzalez collecting two of them. Franco Aleman started the game and was solid in defeat, allowing just one run on five hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out five.
