The George Jenkins Eagles always seem to have their best stuff when the playoffs roll around.
That trend continued this season, as the Eagles rolled through the District 7A-6 tournament to claim their fifth straight district championship. Jenkins won 11-1 over the Celebration Storm in the district semifinal, and followed that with a 7-1 victory over the Winter Haven Blue Devils to claim the district trophy.
Starter Anthony Iatarola made the difference on the mound. The junior left-hander delivered a quality start to pick up the victory, allowing one earned run on a hit and five walks in six full innings of work. Iatarola struck out three on 95 total pitches.
The offense rode the long ball to victory, thanks to home runs from Reece Bowman and Deniel Gonzalez. Gonzalez got the scoring started with a two-run shot in the bottom of the third inning that accounted for the winning run, and Bowman added to that lead with a solo home run an inning later. Bowman added a two-RBI single in the sixth, and Jose Negron also drove in a pair with a two-RBI double.
