Calvary Christian Shuts Out Keswick On Senior Night
Senior Night is a special occasion for every high school program. It is a chance to honor the careers of the players who are set to graduate and move on to adulthood just after the season. For the Calvary Christian Warriors, Friday’s Senior night celebration was more important to their history, as their five seniors also included the final three members of the 2019 state championship team. Since last season was cut short by the global pandemic, Friday represented the chance to salute all of those state champions.
The Warriors did so the best way they know how, with a 10-0 shutout victory over the Keswick Christian Crusaders.
Calvary seniors Jack Cebert, Tyler Dietz, Zachary Ferlita, Charles Stevens and Jackson Unice all walked off the field from their final high school game with a big victory. Cebert, Dietz and Stevens are the last remaining members of the team who helped win the 2019 state title, and now the goal is to make one final run together in pursuit of the program’s third state crown.
Friday’s result served as a nice final preparation as the Warriors (19-6) prepare for the District 3A-8 tournament next week at Berkeley Prep. Calvary earned the top seed and will play on Thursday, April 28th, against the winner between Brooks DeBartolo and Clearwater Central Catholic.
Pitching has been key to the Warriors’ success, as they had 10 shutouts on the season. On Friday night, it was Dearl Edens who set the tone with four scoreless innings that earned him the win. Edens allowed three hits and walked six, and he struck out five. Landen Maroudis pitched a perfect fifth with two strikeouts to finish it off.
Every offensive starter reached base to do their part. Miles Curley led the way by going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, and Stevens went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Blake Opie was 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run, and Matt Rose went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Crusaders (14-4-2) were limited to three base hits, by Caleb Rogers, Luke Bacon and Jake Lavesque.
