Marquis Leads Tampa Prep Past Berkeley Prep 1-0
Tampa Prep’s Gilbert Marquis came out on the winning end of a pitcher’s duel with Berkeley Prep’s Marcus Ayers on Friday afternoon, as the host Terrapins came out with a 1-0 victory. Tampa Prep (3-11) scored a pivotal win in 4A-4, improving to 2-5 while narrowing the gap with the Buccaneers (8-8, 3-4).
Marquis needed just 91 pitches to cruise through seven innings, holding the Bucs to a hit and three walks while picking up four strikeouts. He improved to 2-3 on the season.
Ayers (1-4) was equally dominant, requiring a mere 72 pitches to also go the full seven innings for his fourth complete game of the season. He struck out seven while allowing seven hits and a walk
Tampa Prep struck for the only run of the day in the bottom of the second. Charlie Vari singled on a grounder to left field, and then gave way to courtesy-runner Lucas Harman. Harman advanced to second off a wild pitch and then scored when Matt Moskowitz hit an RBI double to center.
Landon Schabes was 2-for-3 for the Terrapins, while Tucker Fine picked up the only hit of the night for Berkeley Prep.
