Lennard Earns 3rd Seed In 7A-9 With 4-0 Shutout Over Armwood
The Lennard Longhorns secured a key district victory on Thursday night, defeating host Armwood 4-0 to secure the third seed in 7A-9. Lennard starter Edward Tarrant dominated for six innings, holding the Hawks to one hit and three walks while piling up 10 strikeouts. Sophomore Yaziel Nunez came on in relief in the seventh, working around a walk to David Rodriguez to close things out with a pair of strikeouts and a scoreless frame.
Lennard improved to 8-8 on the season, but more importantly the Longhorns are now 3-4 in district play. Armwood dropped to 2-6 in the district to fall into the fourth slot in the district standings, unable to now make up the difference.
With Tarrant cruising, Lennard got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning for all the runs it ultimately needed. Daniel Izquierdo reached on an error and Brendan Herrick reached on a bunt single to put some ducks on the pond. Xavier Montanez was next and he delivered a hard grounder past the second baseman for the RBI single that plated Izquierdo with the winning run. Tyler Santiago then executed a suicide-squeeze that drove in Herrick for a 2-0 lead.
Izquierdo was back at it an inning later, hitting a double and scoring on a sacrifice flyout from Herrick. Lennard then added another run in the sixth when Victor Schilling collected his second hit of the night, advanced on a single from Eli Wilborn and scored on an RBI single from Yazael Nunez.
Bradley Johnson took the loss for the Hawks (5-12), allowing three earned runs on nine hits. He did not walk anyone and recorded four strikeouts.
