King Outlasts Hillsborough In 7A-8
Seeking the school’s first district championship since 2013, the King Lions are off to a perfect start in 2017. The Lions (3-0, 2-0) outlasted 7A-8 foe Hillsborough 5-3 to take sole possession of first place in the district standings on Thursday.
Jeremy Goins picked up the home win for King. He pitched four innings, allowing two runs, two hits with five strikeouts. Justice Thompson went 3-for-4 with a run, double and a stolen base on offense for the Lions.
The game was scoreless until the third inning, when Hillsborough went ahead 1-0. After two straight King errors to start the inning, the Terriers capitalized when Jerrod Cande singled past the shortstop to drive home Quintin Graham.
However, King responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Matthew Jernigan scored Jamarcus Lyons on a line drive to right. Then Anthony Azpeitia put the Lions ahead 3-1, on another line drive to right scoring Danny Terp and Thompson.
Leading 3-2 in the fifth, the Lions put a cushion on their lead. Zarrian Brinson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded scoring Josh Keding. Then Ja’Quez McIntyre singled to short scoring Azpeitia to give King a 5-2 lead.
Hillsborough (2-1, 1-1) closed it to 5-3 in the sixth, but Azpeitia retired the side in the top of the seventh to seal the win for King. Azpeitia earned the two inning save and went 1-for-2 with two RBI, a run, stolen base and a walk for the Lions. Terp went 2-for-3 with a run.
Terrence Doston went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and Cande went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base for the Terriers.
