George Jenkins Remains Undefeated At 4-0
The George Jenkins Eagles traveled south to take on the Gulf Coast Sharks Thursday night, looking to remain undefeated on the season. The Eagles never trailed in this game, jumping out to a 1-0 lead early and holding on to win 3-1 with runs late in the sixth and seventh inning.
Sophomore Jacob Herbert led the Eagles (4-0) by going 2-for-3 on the night and collecting two RBIs in the process. Herbert’s first hit of the game was a line-drive double to right field to drive home Brock Meier for the first run of the game. Hebert’s second double of the game came in the sixth and gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead when Brandt Sundean scored from first.
A sacrifice bunt from Niels Stone brought the Sharks (3-2) to within one. The run scored from Collin Camarigg was all they could muster however as the Eagles pitching staff was lights out from the beginning.
Brady Allen started the game for the Eagles and went six innings, allowing just the one run on three hits and five walks, striking out seven in the process. His counterpart, Sharks’ starter Niels Stone, turned in a strong start with the wrong result. Stone went four innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out five Eagles on the night before surrendering the ball to the bullpen. Luke Dawson and Weston Boling combined to pitch three innings of relief and struck out five batters.
Before exiting the game, Allen helped his cause with a two-out RBI single passed the infield to extend the lead to 3-1. Allen would turn the ball over to Hunter Lucas in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game. Lucas struck out two of the four batters he faced and locked down the win and picked up the save in the 3-1 victory.
