Jesuit Advances To 6A Finals After Shutout Of Robinson
The Jesuit Tigers hosted the Robinson Knights Tuesday night in a 6A regional semifinal showdown. The Tigers scored early behind another dominate pitching performance from Jack Anderson to beat the Knights 5-0 and advance to the 6A regional finals.
The Tigers (24-5) got things going in the first inning with a RBI single from Hunter Tubbs that scored Alex Mocny, giving them the 1-0 lead. Jake Jones doubled the lead with a solo shot to left to lead off the second inning.
Jack Anderson was nearly perfect on the mound for the Tigers. Anderson went the distance, throwing 85 pitches, allowing no runs on one hit and two walks. He struck out six batters in the victory.
“Jack was outstanding as usual,” Tigers manager Miguel Menendez said. “He’s been dominant all year and he continued that tonight. He set the tone right from the start.”
The Knights’ (16-10) lone hit came off the bat of Mathew Steckel in the fourth inning. Steckel reached base again later in the game with a walk. Joey Scionti picked up the other walk and was the only other base runner against Anderson.
Mitchell Thrower added to the Tigers’ lead in the bottom of the fourth when he crossed the plate on a RBI single from Nick Ortega. Two batters later, Mocny picked up his second hit of the game, a two-run double to left that scored Ortega and Nick Perillo, giving the Tigers the five-run lead, a lead that they would not relinquish. The victory advances them to the regional finals, with a trip to JetBlue park on the line.
“We were much better offensively tonight,” said Menendez. “We really worked after the last game in batting practice and the adjustments our guys made showed up tonight. Ortega, Mocny and Jones all had big nights to lead the way. I thought Hunter Tubbs had a big hit in the first to get us on the board and break the ice, especially after our struggles last week.”
