Mitchell Downs Sunlake To Reach Championship
Mitchell won its sixth in a row as it rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth to beat Sunlake 5-2 on Wednesday in a 7A-10 semifinal. The Mustangs (17-5) will take on Northeast (21-6) in Friday’s championship.
With the score tied at 2-2, Mitchell opened the top of the sixth with Trevor Foggia taking first base on a hit-by-pitch and advancing to second on Derik Stager’s sacrifice. Justin Koehler, Michael Risener and Ryan DelNegro hit consecutive singles, with Foggia and Koehler scoring on the last of them. Jakob Mattos followed with another single, this one plating Risener.
DelNegro scored on an error in the first, and Sunlake tied it up when Jacob Ortiz singled to score Kyle Oliver. DelNegro went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Ortiz was 2-for-2.
Sunlake took the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a wild pitch. But the Mustangs came back in the top of the fifth when DelNegro scored as Kyle Frick reached first on a dropped third strike.
Mattos allowed two runs over six and two-third innings. He struck out four, walked four and surrendered five hits.
Tommy Mace pitched six innings, walked two, struck out four and allowed five runs for the Seahawks.
Kyle Blakeney also had two hits for Mitchell.
