Jesuit Cruises Past Spoto In 6A-8 Playoff Victory
The Jesuit Tigers and Spoto Spartans squared off Tuesday afternoon in a 6A-8 district playoff match up at Jefferson. The Tigers were the home team and jumped on the Spartans early and scored in every inning they went to the plate en route to a 11-0 postseason win.
The Tigers (21-5) didn’t waste any time, as they held a 4-0 lead by the end of the first inning. Alex Mocny got things rolling with the first hit of the game for the Tigers, then came around to score the first run on a Nico Baldor single. Baldor crossed the plate three batters later on a two-run single from Jake Jones which also scored Steven Lugo, one of his three runs on the day. Hunter Tubbs added the fourth and final run of the first inning.
“I thought we played well,” said Tigers manager Miguel Menendez. “We did what we were suppose to do. I’m happy we advanced and am excited for the opportunity to win another district title on Thursday.”
The Spartans (4-19) struggled out of the gate, only collecting three hits on the night. Two of the hits came from D’Andre Williams, who finished the night 2-for-2 with a double. Elijah Anderson collected the other hit off of the Tigers pitching.
Tubbs and Jones added to the Tigers lead in the second with a RBI a piece and they did not stop there. One run in the third and four more in the fourth brought the lead to 11. The offensive outburst was capped off with a two-run home run from Braxton Rupp that brought home Thomas Bencivenga.
JJ Niekro picked up the win for the Tigers, going three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five. Drew Martin pitched the final two innings, striking out four to secure the win.
