Berkeley Prep Edges Trinity Catholic To Advance
Berkeley Prep rebounded from last week’s district championship loss to Tampa Catholic to knock off Trinity Catholic 1-0 on Thursday in a 4A regional semifinal. Now the Buccaneers (19-7) get a chance to avenge that loss, as they will take on the Crusaders (14-13) in Tuesday’s regional final with a berth in the state semifinals on the line.
The Buccaneers got the decisive run Thursday in the top of the sixth as Gordon Stetson scored on a wild pitch. Stetson went 2-for-2 with a run.
Berkeley Prep rode the arm of Casey Keller, who pitched six and two-third innings, striking out nine, allowing three hits and walking four. Tyler Fagler came in to make the last out and preserve the shutout.
Trinity Catholic got a stellar effort from Brandon Reitz, who fanned 13 while striking out three and walking three.
Trinity nearly broke through for the tying run in the bottom of the seventh. After Jacob Pigeon lined out, Sean Gourley singled to center before Bryce Boone struck out. Ryan Rogers and pinch-hitter Dillon Lagano walked to load the bases. Fagler entered and got Brandon Reitz to line out to center to end the game.
Berkeley Prep defeated Tampa Catholic twice this year in the regular season, winning 5-1 on March 4th and 6-0 on March 16th.
