Armwood Upsets Braden River In 7A-9 Clash
The Braden River Pirates and Armwood Hawks represented 7A-9 in playoff action on Tuesday. Each team collected seven hits, with the Pirates taking the early advantage, but a three-run third inning by the Hawks helped propel them to the 4-2 upset win.
The Pirates (18-8) took the 1-0 lead on a RBI single from Cole Pencosky in the first inning, scoring Giancarlo Gamboa from second. Tyler Dyson homered in the fourth to score the other run and also started the game on the mound for the Pirates. Dyson pitched well, going six innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out eight batters.
After falling behind 1-0, the Hawks (10-11) finally got to Dyson in the third. With two on and two outs, Eric Blanc swung the momentum in the Hawks favor. Blanc took a 2-1 pitch and sent it into left for a triple, scoring Devin Tolliver and Justin Maning to take the 2-1 lead. Blanc came around to score on a wild pitch for a 3-1 lead during the next at-bat.
“Tonight’s win was a total team effort,” said Hawks manager Robert Woodkey. “Every guy, whether in the game or in the dugout, played a huge part. The intensity was magnificent and they battled to the end. I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys.”
Manning added another run in the seventh on a double from Anthony Digacoma.
David Rodriguez started the game and went the distance for the Hawks. The junior threw 93 pitches, allowing just two runs on seven hits and one walk, while striking out two in the victory.
