Alonso Rallies In Sixth Against Gaither To Pick Up The Victory
The Gaither Cowboys hosted the Alonso Ravens Tuesday night in a clash of non-district opponents. The Cowboys held a lead late in the game, but a three-run home run from Jordan Butler propelled the Ravens to an 8-6 victory, their ninth road win of the season.
The Ravens (16-6) came into the game as a very strong road team, helping them to maintain a spot in the Tampa Bay Power Rankings for most of the season. The Ravens jumped out to an early two-run lead in the first on an RBI single to center field from Butler that scored Ryan Mejia. Freshman Johnathon Cruz came in as a courtesy runner for Butler and later came around to scored the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Jared DeSantolo.
The lead was short-lived as the Cowboys (10-8) responded quickly with two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. With one on and one out, AJ Drisdom singled to center field to score Camryn Williams from second to cut the deficit in half. Drisdom scored the tying run later in the inning.
The Ravens re-took the lead in the third with runs from Jose Ciccarello, Cruz, and Peyton Woble. Once again, the lead was short lived. A double from Edgar Nunez brought in the first run of the inning. Then, a triple from Williams scored Nunez and Kenny Rodriguez to tie the game for the Cowboys. Williams scored the go-ahead run the very next at-bat on a sacrifice fly from Danny Gutcher.
Now facing a one-run deficit in the sixth Butler came to the plate with two on and two out. Butler hit a three-run home run, scoring Mejia and Ciccarello for the two-run lead.
Nunez returned to mound in the seventh and, after getting into trouble, induced a ground-ball double-play to end the game and pick up the win.
