Lakewood Survives Battle With Largo To Win 10-9
Largo and Lakewood combined for 19 hits and nine errors Monday, and when the dust settled from the back-and-forth battle, the Spartans came away with a 10-9 win.
Lakewood (6-5) took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Down 9-8, the Spartans led off with a single by Sonny Neuman. After two outs, Marcus Bradley doubled to left, scoring Neuman to tie it. Anthony Hudson followed with a double to score courtesy runner Max Fellner for the final margin.
The teams came out swinging from the start. The Packers had three players — Drew Guido, Chris Rocchio and Austin Shedler — get on via errors. Cody Lee grounded out to score Shedler, and courtesy runner Shaun Neiman scored on Hunter Catrett’s single to right.
Lakewood came back in its half of the first and scored four runs with two outs. After two groundouts, Bo Bichette walked and Dontae Mitchell singled. Neuman doubled to score Bichette. Jeremy Texel walked, loading the bases, before Aidan O’Dowd drew a walk of his own to bring in Mitchell. Neuman and Texell scored on errors.
After a scoreless second, Largo plated four in the top of the third. Drew Guido homered before Josh Bartley grounded out to score Michael Arbutine. Tim Rodriguez singled in Catrett and Jordan Mazzuco to make it 7-4. Shedler’s single allowed Rodriguez to score.
An error allowed three runs to score for the Spartans in the bottom of the fourth, and suddenly it’s a one-run game, with Largo ahead 8-7.
Another error by Largo in the next inning made it a tie game.
The Packers got the lead back in the top of the sixth on Guido’s RBI double, but the Spartans weren’t done, rallying for the final time in the bottom of the inning to go ahead for good.
