Lakeland Christian Shuts Out District Foe Seffner Christian
The Seffner Christian Crusaders had a tough time getting anything going Tuesday night when they hosted the Lakeland Christian Vikings in a big 3A-4 match-up. The Crusaders were only able to muster together five hits against Vikings pitching as they fell by way of the shut out, 6-0.
The Vikings (5-3, 2-2) came into the day after losing their last two district games by a wide margin and looked to get back on track within the district. Brock Hutchinson took to the mound for the visitors and pitched a solid five innings, throwing 67 pitches while allowing just four hits. The Crusaders (4-6, 0-3) were able to get base runners aboard in Hutchinson’s last inning of work, but were unable to do any damage. Dylan Traffanstedt relieved Hutchinson in the bottom of the sixth and stayed in for the remainder of the game. Traffanstedt faced eight batters in his two innings of work, allowing one hit and hitting one, but he kept the Crusaders off the board to preserve the shutout.
The Vikings offense was lead by Caleb Homol, who went 2-for-4 on the evening, collecting two RBIs. Canaan Bennett brought in the first run of the game in the top of the fourth when he sent a line drive into left field for a double which scored the Vikings starting pitcher, Hutchinson, for the first and ultimately winning run. The Vikings added runs in each of the remaining innings, including two-run innings in each the sixth and seventh.
Before leaving the game, Hutchinson supported his pitching effort with a productive offensive effort. Hutchinson went 1-for-3 and scored twice to help him secure the win. Bennett also scored two runs to go along with his RBI earlier in the game. Case Hannum and Tate Watley accounted for the other two runs in the victory.
