Alonso’s Butler Shines In Win Over Newsome
The Alonso Ravens pulled even with the Newsome Wolves in the race for the 9A-8 top seed Thursday night. The Ravens came into the contest a game behind their rivals in both the overall and district standings, but were able to come away with a convincing 5-0 win. It was their sixth win in a row and serves as retribution for a 3-0 loss to the Wolves earlier in the year.
Jordan Butler and Mike Paule led the way for the Ravens. After a pair of lead-off walks in the first, Butler responded by slapping an RBI double into left-center. An RBI groundout by Peyton Woble then gave Alonso a quick 2-0 lead. Butler went on to enjoy a perfect 2-for-2 showing at the plate, with two runs scored.
Paule added to the lead with a two-out, bases-loaded single in the fifth that brought home two baserunners. He added a third RBI on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Butler also had himself a night on the mound. He earned the win by tossing five-and-a-third innings, fanning eight and giving up three hits.
Newsome had a healthy five-game winning streak snapped. Both teams now sit at 6-3 overall with identical 2-1 marks in the district.
