Nunez Leads Bell Creek To Shutout Over Hernando Christian
Bell Creek posted its second straight shutout victory with a 15-0 decision over visiting Hernando Christian on Friday afternoon. The Panthers improved to 2-1 thanks to two big innings on offense and a dominant performance on the mound.
Freshman Yazael Nunez went the distance for the victory, allowing just one hit and two walks in five scoreless innings. Nunez struck out 14 Lion batters to take the lead on the club, after teammate Troy Gonzalez had 10 strikeouts in a one-hit victory on Tuesday.
Nunez also had a big day at the plate to lead the Bell Creek offense, going 2-for-2 with a triple, three RBIs and two walks. The Panthers broke things open with five runs in the bottom of the second, before putting it out of reach with an eight-run third.
Troy Gonzalez and Ryan Harrington led off the second by drawing walks, and a throwing error brought Gonzalez home for the first run of the ball game. Jalen Wright also walked and Reece Black followed with an RBI groundout that plated Harrington. Connor Kovalovich walked to keep things going and Nick Powell delivered the big hit with a two-RBI single to center field. Powell later scored on a passed ball.
Walks and errors led to a high-scoring third, highlighted by Nunez’s big triple.
