Nelson’s Slam Leads Calvary Christian Past Brooks DeBartolo
A big fourth inning blew things open to lead host Calvary Christian to a 12-0 shutout over Brooks DeBartolo Friday night. Mathieu Nelson delivered the big dagger with a grand slam home run and Collin Booten delivered a strong start on the mound.
Jack Bonder and Christian Cairo walked to start the fourth, and Eric Kennedy reached on a bunt single to load the bases for Nelson. The sophomore fell behind 0-2 in the count and then launched a shot to left field that doubled the lead for the Warriors (2-0).
Calvary kept things going as Graham Hoffman singled to center, Matt Murphy walked and Cavan Ingram reached on a fielder’s choice. Patrick Fahlman delivered another death blow with a shot to center field that cleared the bases for a three-RBI triple. Fahlman then scored on a wild pitch.
Booten went four strong innings on the hill, tallying four strikeouts while allowing one hit and a walk. Logan Eade managed the only hit for the Phoenix (0-2).
Justin Bench had a nice day at the plate for Calvary, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs. After Kennedy singled and stole second in the bottom of the first, Bench smacked and RBI double that put his club on the scoreboard. Bench later scored in the inning thanks to an RBI single from Hoffman.
